After 35 years of volunteering.....
Posted On 09/23/2008 12:01:39 by mrslinda

Hi Friendiverseland,

I have been volunteering teaching Laubach Literacy for over 35 years. I have tutored children who were not doing up to par work in school. I have tutored American-born adults who for one reason or another did not catch the learning they were supposed to have done years earlier; i have tutored many foreign students. Volunteering for Literacy has been highly rewarding for me. There is nothing quite like the light bulb going on in someone's head when you know they "see the light and get it". It is greatly rewarding to see this happen. Reading is something once people seem to get it, they get it and don't want to stop.

One thing I can say for sure about this, adults of any state I have tutored in whether it be Illinois, Florida, Nevada or Missouri are so eager to learn. They are a joy to behold.

It has saddened me and both made me happy to realize for the first time in 35 years, i can also get paid for doing literacy. Due to the hard economic times i can no longer afford not to tutor for a fee. However, now I am tutoring l/2 time for a fee and 1/2 time not for a fee. It is kind of bittersweet to me. I know what it is to substitute teach but this is entirely different and able to spend total time, effort and energy with one student.
Thanks for listening, Friendiverseland.
